India has rapidly expanded 4G coverage with Jio, Airtel, and Vi networks now reaching most urban and semi-urban areas. 5G rollout is accelerating in major metros. An eSIM avoids the documentation hurdles required for a physical local SIM as a foreign visitor.
Foreigners can purchase Indian SIMs but must provide a passport, visa, and local address — a process that can take 24–48 hours for verification. A travel eSIM purchased internationally before arrival is far simpler and activates immediately.
Major tourist circuits — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Mumbai, Goa, Kerala, and Rajasthan's main cities — have solid 4G coverage. Very remote areas and some hill stations may have weaker signals. Download offline maps for rural journeys.
India has excellent app-based services for transport (Ola, Rapido), food (Swiggy, Zomato), and payments (UPI). Regular use of maps and these apps consumes around 3–5 GB per week. Budget accordingly and consider a larger plan if you use video calls frequently.
