How to Set Up a Travel eSIM on iPhone and Android (Step-by-Step)

An eSIM installs like an app — QR code or a tap in settings — and your phone runs two SIMs simultaneously. Your home number stays active for calls; the travel eSIM handles data. Here's exactly how to do it on each platform.

First: check your phone is compatible

iPhone XS (2018) and later — all support eSIM. iPhone 14 and later in the US are eSIM-only (no physical SIM slot). On Android: Pixel 3+, Samsung Galaxy S20+, and most flagship Android phones from 2020 onwards. Go to Settings and search "eSIM" — if the option exists, you're good.

One catch: some phones are carrier-locked and won't accept third-party eSIMs. If you bought your phone directly from a carrier on a payment plan, check with them first. Unlocked phones and iPhones bought outright have no restriction.

Setting up on iPhone

Buy your plan from the provider — you'll get a QR code by email.
Go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan.
Point your camera at the QR code (don't screenshot it — scan it live).
Label the plan (e.g. "Japan trip") and set it as your data line.
Keep your home SIM as the default for calls and texts.

Don't activate it yet if you're still home — most plans start counting from first use, not from purchase. Turn it on when you land.

Setting up on Android

Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIM cards (path varies by manufacturer — search "eSIM" if you can't find it).
Tap Add eSIM or Download a SIM.
Scan the QR code from your provider.
Set the new eSIM as your data connection and keep your physical SIM for calls.

Three things to do before you board

Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. Otherwise your phone might use home-network roaming instead of the eSIM data. Settings → Cellular → your home SIM → Data Roaming: off.
Download offline maps. Google Maps and Apple Maps both allow offline downloads. Download your destination city before you fly.
Save your provider's support contact. If the eSIM doesn't activate on arrival, you'll want their chat link without needing to Google it.

Common problems and fixes

No signal after arrival: Toggle airplane mode off and on. Give it 2–3 minutes to connect to a local tower. If still nothing, go to Settings → Cellular → your eSIM → Network Selection and switch from Automatic to Manual, then pick a local carrier.

QR code won't scan: Make sure you're scanning the original QR code, not a screenshot or photo of it. Most providers also give you a manual activation code as a backup.

eSIM not showing in settings: Restart the phone after purchase. On some devices the eSIM profile takes a minute to download.
